[00:05:59] Welcome Dr. Boston how are you sir? Okay, we have to be with you So we got the first you first uh got a first question for us. We got our first question

[00:06:07] Which is favorite in a failed team and why I'm pretty sure I know what you're gonna say I'm sorry to do again. What is your favorite in a failed team and why? Well, obviously the giant because I played for them for a couple years

[00:06:24] Yes sir. Yes sir. All right three part question where where are you from? Where did you go to high school and what sports did you play? I'm from Elizabeth City North Carolina We checked the time was the segregated south

[00:06:42] Went to an all-black high school feet up in more high school And what was the third question? What sports did you play? Uh football I was all-season football all-season basketball all-season track and field Play baseball

[00:07:01] Wow, awesome so describe playing sports during the segregated south like being in the softest segregated Well the the only difference was you know Obviously didn't know what it was like playing against uh You know white players So you know we just played against each other and

[00:07:24] Assume that we were better than then and I didn't find it How to the reality and did I eventually want to you personally Minnesota Where I can please again so I'll white players for the first time and realize that they could play football too

[00:07:42] During our last interview there was a theme of mistreatment by the Purchered Alabama police against blacks any run-ins with the Elizabeth City North Carolina police during your youth Yeah On a Sunday afternoon Two friends in my own

[00:08:05] This is going to civil rights movement we were walking down to three One of my friends I'll be clearly taking a break and through through a wallwork window And Obviously if you started running I was in front shift my heels and I fell and You go redneck

[00:08:28] Police put his boot on my neck And obviously use it flying back in those days. Well, what do you think you're doing? And I just knew I was bound but Fortunately the arrest that the arrest in me my mother was a caterer in that Small town and

[00:08:51] Pated for the chief of police and put you in the A lot of the people in power But it got me out of jail But that was my experience with With the white police, you know back in those days. Wow that's interesting

[00:09:09] Dr. Boston how did you get to Minnesota and What's your recruiting story? What's that like what was that like? Well, you know obviously my high school coach went to a aunt University and North Carolina That was pretty much

[00:09:30] Where I was gonna go and then all of a sudden The the University of Minnesota in the she and stay U.S. D Indiana Started recruiting and And Bobby I don't know if you remember these names but Bobby Dale

[00:09:51] Who played for the Kansas City Chief's all pro with the shield he knows for a life and who is a running back right? I love to play for the Minnesota Viking people properly I'm Western say on North Carolina. I do have to play basketball

[00:10:10] Well the St. Louis Hall is from North Carolina So when I went on a recruiting visit to I'm in Minnesota All of these North Carolina People were Part of that visit No Obviously I became very comfortable And my visit and

[00:10:32] And so that made the choice to attend the University of Minnesota A lot easier Wow Describe your first memories of arriving at the University of Minnesota and what it was like being a black student athlete there in 1960s any do's and don'ts Well fortunately

[00:10:52] The summer after graduation and In 1964 they the coaches had a rain for me to have a job so I came To campus and we're working Campus construction And I had an apartment that I was staying in with Louis Hudson

[00:11:19] University of Minnesota basketball player and obviously played a lot of NDA Getting archie Clark who played for the Lakers and The these guys were like you knew it And I was coming into the freshmen so I ended up Sharing an apartment with them

[00:11:40] And obviously it was it was a wild ride or summer You want to see any you want to see any detail back then You want to share the details of the wild nice there Dr. Boston No, but

[00:12:01] So so you pledge alpha alpha tell us why why do you pledge and how you go about pledging Well alpha was the only black fraternity Uncampus at that time And they had been conversations that happens and the negatives were going to Create

[00:12:27] Return to the on campus but at the time that I thought more year when I played Apple was really the only choice And so we Out six I was decided to To pledge Alpha and six of the other guys you want white fraternities

[00:12:49] How obviously glad that there are chose the opposite There was there wasn't we became the first undergraduate chapter The people that actually started the fraternity Not started the Trinity but thought the chapter on campus We're graduate students who Where full monogeth at the university But Starting in 1962 and

[00:13:24] Then now first ever said wow Shella to the apples So so we've got a little segment this is your granddaughter segment It's called the Mary's nerd nugget fun fact The last time Minnesota won the big tin conference title in football was in 1967

[00:13:46] How does it feel to be a part of the last big tin championship football team? Well, we keep waiting for the record to be broken Oh We kind of like the you know old man My name is often Right Underceded team That's you here

[00:14:09] They kept you know they keep saying It's gonna be broken We remain We remain the last big fan champions Wow, did you ever think you would return to your album model as an as a AD? Had no clue When I But I left in 68

[00:14:36] All I was thinking about was what's next? The first heard of I had the old couple of comments to try not to go to Vietnam to be a part of the Vietnam war And the so-called service agent there in this vicinity

[00:14:54] One by the name of Roots guy and how I'm hell I remember that name from so far But Send me to Vietnam And I had a big injury for weekend and Doing that going that time I went to party Was whining about having to go to Vietnam

[00:15:20] These guys I met in this event Me that they're commanding officer was the die hard job thing So I he said that when you come to the Check in tomorrow You know will meet you and we'll introduce you to one So I go down on a Saturday morning

[00:15:40] Good induction center Thinking that I'm getting ready to go to Vietnam and I got training camp for months and I have a way I'm going through the medical review and And never will forget it ended up getting one after Which is physically unable to perform

[00:16:05] And then obviously when the training camp and I say they deserve this Physical unable to perform like a play for the judge. Let's play for the judge Yeah So go back I'm assume did you play in the blue group group great game, right? Yeah 19 December of 1967

[00:16:32] So what was the story of Sanders okay? Charlie Sanders and I Charlie the tight end for the University of Southern played obviously But the future of line is the whole thing He was a whole painter. I was standing clear We were driving up from his home in

[00:16:53] In the race girl North Carolina and when we got to about 10 miles outside of the country we saw this sick deal for what it says Welcome to Alabama Oh my the cool club's plan Oh wow Now this is after spending four years in liberal Minnesota

[00:17:16] You know and we're you know you had come to appreciate diversity of integration You know you were comfortable in in your environment You did a sneak with one eye open, you know you and all of a sudden

[00:17:31] You know we're seeing signs about the cool club's plan and who's oh wow But it and surprisingly I was I thought we would be in an integrated situation but the white players actually stayed in a Hotel downtown and we stayed in the black players stayed in a hotel

[00:17:54] in the Got a few tours the black part of town wow Interesting so Like the boss and what was it like to play for the giants? Well, obviously when you're in it You don't think much about What you have accomplished

[00:18:16] You just you know it's a job you know you go to practice and And you know when you sit down and have coffee with friends You know Say that you know this is one of the best quarterback the whole time you just

[00:18:32] Have enough cup of coffee with friends you know home of Jones Spider-Lock art You know that you know there you buddy people that you just You know go to work with you know you go to war with and

[00:18:49] But in hindsight, you know obviously and you gotta remember back when I was playing There was no AFL okay, so you know to make there was only 2016 You know and what is now What is this ah Believed with the packers the bears you know those

[00:19:17] The then the equal charges the cases to the cheese the AFL right they didn't exist That might have been take place in the 1970 Okay, and and so you know for for us to make And NFL team at that point, you know you get to be lucky

[00:19:39] And tell us how You know the opposite you know there were less than I think I think it was only 2016 remember to read okay I gotta know this Before before moving to the next question coming out of the tunnel

[00:19:56] What was that that you know I see a lot of things nowadays they it's a lot of hype and it's like it really it's really I love it. You know, they show pre-game and they in the tunnel and coming out of the tunnel

[00:20:07] Here a lot of players saying that the adrenaline rush what is that like coming out of the tunnel to Thousands of fans discrimin like what is that like Well, it's an entianment rush and you know you get you get excited

[00:20:23] You already excited obviously because you know you get ready to play game your Your pumped up because of you know the competition I think the The most coming the time that I that I felt like the most pumped we were playing the Chicago Bears

[00:20:45] And I hadn't I haven't been opportunity to play against dlc Obviously one of the best running back in this year when I found and you know that opportunity You know, it was sort of I was sort of pumped you know how sometimes when you

[00:21:05] You get ready to play Yeah Dr. Balsen I love it that's what I was talking about now That's I needed to I needed you to take me in the tunnel with you and you just took me in the tunnel What you thank you for that

[00:21:24] What did you do with your first NFL check Interesting question I follow what you think And may she was in there right Yeah, no I was well actually we did pay cheks This you know the right deposit was a little hot time away

[00:21:50] All right how long did you play? I play two years With the guys and three years and I can make him football with the fans over British Columbia line really so real quick What was the difference between playing for the NFL and the Canadian Lee?

[00:22:15] Well 12 players for the Canadian V1 114 I didn't know that was the biggest difference. I didn't know that the 3000 set of four downs And the field was 10 yards wider But the pound level really wasn't that That's a lot of the players get a member there were a lot of

[00:22:46] talent that had no place to go because they were so few teams In the NFL at that time so the talent level But at the same time the only member right 10 or 10 or 11 Americans who could play in on a team So the Americans pretty much covered the talent

[00:23:12] Of the Canadian teams And then obviously all the time could Penevi and got better In quality of the Canadian team Yeah, fair So one quick question and I want to ask about the So is there any

[00:23:28] And advantage or disadvantage like say if you played in the Canadian Lee Prior to coming to the NFL Are there any advantages of or disadvantages From going transition from Canadian to NFL? Yeah, because obviously And you had to defend on the time now they The talent of the

[00:23:51] Canadian football Significant is better than it was because now a lot of Canadian players Players who are born Canadian Play college in the United States and so they're coach better They're training is better Yeah, the biggest player. I want to play a Canadian Lee He did

[00:24:17] Yes, he did The biggest difference in the They're just not as many quality players that series in the NFL Okay, what was living in Newark New Jersey like as a giant in the late 60s? Well You know Newark I

[00:24:43] One point what they let me put this way the area that I really is Was I I had a park across the street from me co weekly car there was an out Can I like send to park and do your outstanding We live and I gave it apartment

[00:25:04] 24 hour dual man service into a pool Yeah, and I think the apartment building was like 20 stores high So you know Where I was living in in Newark was a lot different from the other part Of of Newark hmm the wow

[00:25:31] Wow, okay, what were the salaries like and who had the largest salary on the giant team at that time? What kind of money were y'all making? I I think I'm gonna guess the friend target and would be the highest pay but My salary and my first year was 30,000

[00:25:54] I got a 15,000 dollar signing bonus And But one of the things that That happened with the giants is that they had an alt see and Speaking form and so And the owners of the giants were athletes die hard capital and they would support

[00:26:24] Capricornization Catholic churches by having players home Current players in the office in the speed And so while I my base salary for the dance was 30,000 I may as much during the off season by Going to speak to you know different Pappacled medations and

[00:26:49] Like the first one I went to it. I didn't realize that I was gonna get an honor ready We were getting 300 a week just to accept speaking and gays But when I finished the guy gave me an envelope And it was a check for 500 dollars Wow

[00:27:10] And I actually I saw on the memo sections the check There's honorarium and Now I'm gonna call his graduate right until I'm here put on a Wow Yeah, we're looking up and Payment for services right and so when the woman called That's just

[00:27:31] You know we wanted to accept or speak any gays Once I knew that you know we're gonna likely get an honor ready I sent it a whole lot more right of the Speeding gays, but I would say my first year between salary and

[00:27:50] Public speaking. I probably did about 60,000 so you know back in 1960 And 1968 you know that wasn't that was an all bad Okay, if you look at real quick you look at that compared to you see the kind of salaries they get in nowadays

[00:28:07] Dr. Pulse you see what they signed for nine days Yeah, that's that's crazy big money big money Right right right Which NFL player do you remember he is to hit you the hardest? Oh, that's easy 5 rounds play for the Philadelphia Eagles

[00:28:34] And we were playing the Eagles in Yankee Stadium And it was long yardage like a third down and I did the teacons don't know if I did a swim move Made a play and On the way back to the hold roll

[00:28:53] Bob Brown says don't do that shit again, Ricky And I said after you brown And about oh maybe half a quarter later. I did the same move And if you look at some of the old NFL Movies you'll see Bob Brown

[00:29:18] Bob had his hands things up like boxing gloves And Nice the swim move my misdech and was exposed and and Bob get me ran in my solo flag With them boxing gloves And I was down for the Did it take you to let's Oh

[00:29:45] As a top of Yankee That one out never forget Okay, what was playing in the CFL like in all on did you play? Two years and the CFL I Spain my knee In my in my second year and the The

[00:30:10] Doctors said that I could rehab it or I could have have and and not and not have surgery Or I could have surgery and probably continue to play and

[00:30:25] at that point I needed to I decided that I would go back to school and finish my degree and and pursue a career And I wasn't sure I've got thought it was going to be just coaching But as it turned out After I Got my

[00:30:49] And opportunity to get to be as graduate a stayston So I pursued a masters degree and Okay, I had the professor in teacher at Montclare State College then It's just it turned out Had an opportunity to pursue a doctor at the New York University

[00:31:10] And so that that's so in a series of things happen over Over period of five years and Dead lay it obviously to a career in Hydication so how did you get into coaching? What I was at Montclare um One of the the head coach

[00:31:36] And I met and he asked me if I'd be interested in working with His players from time to time and And I said yeah, why not and I didn't really have any In the specific Sort of charge at that time and after a year he was

[00:31:56] Obviously became impressed With my ability to teach and my understanding you know a defense and so After a couple years he had me as the Patents of coordinator and I did that for 15 years Okay, so I was coaching coaching Join in to move

[00:32:23] He came direct to services at Montclare Okay, that led to the rest of my career. What sound meals the best player you ever coached? Yeah, although there was another live factor That I coach who also played in the U.S. F.L. Kind of any deemorinas

[00:32:43] Then it was six four two 35 You know ran like four six and He was alive It says physically looking he was a better better looking live back at his dad Sam was obviously yeah, Sam didn't look short. Yeah, he was good boy six four two thirty five

[00:33:08] Yeah, that was the That was that a good vision preschool He was big yeah For a line back as I think they were long back Wow, yeah, he was there was six four two thirty five. He was he could play

[00:33:25] Oh my goodness. Yeah, so how did you become an athletic director? Well when I As a direct of student services One of the things that I did was work closely with the athletic people And Whenever I had the opportunity and that worked you know with them and

[00:33:51] Eventually over a period of time I felt like I had Heads and the knowledge necessary so I applied to division three School in New Jersey pain college And became an athletic director there for three years And then

[00:34:13] I was ready. It thought I was ready and was ready for division one job and so I applied to the university of Rhode Island In fact the funny thing is that time was That was the old Yankee conference and plans this

[00:34:30] That's when I was doing I'm a model of the University of Maine Right Lands play Wow and it was being in the same conference And then after three years that Rhode Island I Took a little to John Lee then became the first

[00:34:54] Black athletic director in the good ten conference And at that time there was really only three Out of three hundred and fifteen division one school there only three black and the country Jeansmith who is in the process of retiring from a house they now

[00:35:15] And I got a Charles Harris Who eventually became the 80 that is on the state and myself You ever cement a soda and then in 1981 Mike Garrett became the the University of Southern California So for about 20 years There were four black 80s In the country of division one school

[00:35:44] And I think now the last I heard it were 15 out of about 350 schools okay You're not a lot Sort of an exclusive club Okay, Dr. Martin let me ask you this

[00:36:00] So you were on the from quit from on you want to your NCAA basketball final four selection committee right Correct what was it like being on that What is boy I Well, it went my favorite committee by the way and where where are you sport? Oh Well

[00:36:20] And then we'll find you You know you get to travel around the country and stay and some of the nice days hotel The gifts that you received from Some From the different towns that you see I mean that you visit to whole games It is one of the

[00:36:47] And the style of standing the kind of Wining and dying that we were given back in those days Can't happen anymore obviously because people of jealous You know that and they will call you out In fact when when I was on the committee You know again we were

[00:37:07] We were really really treated like Like specific I went to the one in 92 And I stayed I don't know if you remember this but you you had just moved there and so do you you had an apartment in down I think off a hint of pin Avenue and

[00:37:25] And I so you had no need for the hotel room. I stayed in your hotel room as a visitor Every time I came out of the hotel and back into the room There was a gift like it was Santa Claus wow was a VCR

[00:37:42] Snickers like cameras. I mean it was it was golf bags. I mean it was tons of just stuff corporate house over you I was I was in college. I had just I was probably 22 22. I was just finished and I graduated for me Wow Oh, I did remember

[00:38:02] Yeah, I remember That's what that's what I meant Randy that that's I meant Randy that that weekend Really Carter yeah, that's what we hung out. Oh, thank wow So tell us what do you do now any political aspirations Yeah, I played walk the top Three days a week

[00:38:22] Monday with a Friday at night off and I'm running for Martin County Commissioner Just had the primary three months ago. I wanted primary and The no the election starts and No well no from a fifth so If I'm lucky I'll be

[00:38:49] Indecated as a county commissioner in November. It's not I think you need to play go An artist I heard you say Congratulations on your political aspirations also

[00:39:05] Must success I'll play I got to actually this what's your golf swing like what you we how many what what's your tea off what you? Well, I'm a 12 handicap So my average scores always in the low 80s

[00:39:18] You know we have those days where you can have a special round It's seven is and you have those days where you can't hit a shot and you're in the 90s You know I'm I've been lucky one of the first Of being in my business. Is that play

[00:39:36] some of the best top courses in the world and I had an opportunity to play the masters down in August And you know that was like a drink come true and No, I got the last year there's the the please tell me the player Pell-Babee

[00:39:57] Yeah, oh my goodness Yeah, I played four five times the trouble. That is So I got the last year this is I saw it on TV is it as pretty in person as it is on TV Yeah, it really is the step for the first three holes

[00:40:18] Is it is I was really disappointed because I had I mean I was expecting this the lavish You know healing off course Once you get past the third hole Then it becomes what you've seen on TV Wow That's awesome. That's awesome Dr. Boston

[00:40:44] All right here we go this is what we call our final dry sports jaffa these do I'm a dry sports. We don't ask you a few questions and we didn't excited about this point So we finally go laughing a little bit to Dr. Boston so

[00:40:58] Here we go your first question is where were you when Dr. King was assassinated and do you remember The Newark riots to take place in Newark Now the riots were before me and you mean the time that changed the last night 1968 I don't remember about my

[00:41:19] In 1968 August 1968 because I was born it was in in training camp and in Sergio Connecticut For what did James? Yeah by the giant okay, okay. Wow interesting Okay, all right so you are asked to speak at a roast for charity

[00:41:44] During their speech will Smith walks up and smack you across the face what happens next I punch him out That's that's a simple as the right All right, I just think I'm gonna turn the other tree All right, we got to double him back on this

[00:42:07] What was the nicest golf course you ever played and why? I know you just say you played that pepper beast Well what was the one in your opinion the nicest golf course I thought so Wow It's the rain It's the The This man a cure

[00:42:27] You know it's just You just it does not have pretty golf course in the world and what was happening again? August I got I got to look down on up How does Caitlyn Clark compare to molecular states legend caroblacedowski?

[00:42:45] You know, I put them in the same in the same category I mean now Car was ahead of her time. Yes, she was a great player And then the pro lead that they had at that time she was an outstanding player and she was bigger than Caitlyn

[00:43:05] But she was she was special Coach we're quick give me your rundown Caitlyn Your opinion you know I like Obviously he'd been around sports and then seen a lot of quality players You know she She's obviously strong because you know she takes a beat

[00:43:30] But the thing that separates her from any from anybody else is that you know her strength to be able to shoot some of the BPC and you know without Sort of herelin the ball and she She actually you know choose the jump shot
