Random 3 A. M. Thoughts…

How do blind people know when to stop wiping after bowel movement?

Blind people use the same physical cues that sighted people rely on (even if they don’t think about them):

1.

Tactile feedback (feel)

  • When wiping, they can feel whether the area is still sticky or unclean.

  • As it gets clean, the sensation becomes smoother and drier.

Consistency of the wipe

  • Toilet paper feels different when it’s picking up waste vs. when it’s clean.

  • Over time, people learn what “clean” feels like through awareness.

  • Just like anyone else, they rely on internal cues—if it still feels unclean, they continue.

So it’s not really about vision—it’s about touch and experience.
