We discussed Zacchaeus, who was a "chief tax collector" in Jericho, which made him wealthy but also a social outcast. When Jesus was passing through Jericho, Zacchaeus, being too short to see over the crowd, climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view. Jesus stopped, looked up, and called him by name, telling him to come down to his house.
This public acceptance from Jesus led to a dramatic change in Zacchaeus. He stood up and promised to give half of his possessions to the poor and repay anyone he had defrauded four times the amount. Jesus's actions and Zacchaeus's response illustrate themes of redemption, acceptance, and the power of God's grace to change even the most despised individuals. The story is found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 19.
